The Regiment was formed in 1911 from Volunteer infantry (Rifle) units in Taranaki.  Members of the Regiment  served on Gallipoli as part of the Wellington Infantry Battalion.

The badge shows Mount Taranaki ( Egmont), symbolising the Regiment's  home province, and a scene of dairy farmland, refeerring to the province's  most important industry.
