Overview
The streetwear label Little Brother was founded by Murray and Mark Crane in1999, along with a second label, Crane Brothers which, withan emphasis on traditional tailoring, was aimed at the higher end of the menswear market. In 2001 Murray Crane took over both labels.
In 2004 Murray Crane collaborated with the iconic Dunedin based record company Flying Nun on a series of Little Brother teeshirts, featuring cover and poster art from the company's extensive back catalogue of DIY graphics. The teeshirts were produced as limited editions of 60.
Of the series Murrary Crane, who grew up in the South Island town of Geraldine, commented:
“Flying Nun has a ‘hand-made’ quality that I really admire. I’m at an age where I remember those bands and the impact that they had. It was such an exciting time because we were all so starved of anything cool. For these reasons, we did it ourselves.”
In 2009, the established menswear company Barkers took over the distribution of the Little Brother label, the design direction of which continues to be overseen by Crane.
