Sir Edwin Amies; designer; late 1960s; United Kingdom
Overview
This 'Sincerity' labelled suit is a good example of a man's suit designed in consultation with a key twentieth-century design house (Hardy Amies). It was made in New Zealand by Cambridge Clothing Company, and illustrates the continuing influence of British fashion in New Zealand.
Hardy Amies
Hardy Amies was a regular visitor to New Zealand, and his visits were often enthusiastically documented by the New Zealand Woman's Weekly. He began manufacturing menswear under licence in New Zealand in partnership with Cambridge Clothing Company in the late 1960s.
In 1981, he invited Maurice Mihotich of fashion label Miss Deb to manufacture his womenswear range in New Zealand.
