Overview
This poster was designed by Edward McKnight Kauffer for London Transport, and features two iconic landmarks of London - Westminster Abbey and Big Ben. London Transport and the Underground had promoted sightseeing in the capital from their first pictorial posters created in 1908.
Kauffer was one of the most prolific and influential graphic designers of the 20th century. He visually translated the complicated language of Cubism, Futurism and Surrealism into accessible commercial design. At the beginning of the First World War, he moved from Paris to London where he gained his first commissions from the London Underground. During the next 25 years he worked for Shell, the Great Western Railway, the Empire Marketing Board and the British Post Office.
