This striking poster advertises 'Overcoat Week'– a marketing initative employed by clothing and department stores such as Hallenstein Brothers, the Drapery Importing Company (DIC),and James Smith's.Each year from the 1920s to 1940s, Overcoat Week encouraged men to purchase the latest overcoat styles and fabrics ready for winter.
The New Zealand Clothing Factory
Bendix Hallenstein set up the New Zealand Clothing Factory in Dunedin in 1873. It made basic, hard-wearing clothing for men and boys in Dunedin, and then in towns and cities throughout New Zealand. In 1876, Hallenstein opened shops as a sales outlets for his factories. By 1900, there were 34 Hallenstein Brothers' shops around the country.
The company peaked in 1986 with 72 stores. In 1985, Hallensteins merged with Glassons –a successful women's wear company. The company is now known as Hallenstein Glasson Holdings Ltd, and Hallensteins stores continue to be an important men's clothing retailer throughout the country.
