Overview
This British Red Cross Society Medal was awarded to Miss Lucy Gertrude Viney. As the medal was not an official British decoration, it was worn on the right-hand side of the recipient's uniform.
Establishment
The medal was established by a resolution of the Council of the Society on 15 October 1920, which states: 'The Council of the Society has authorised the issue of a medal in recognition of voluntary service rendered by members of the Society and its Voluntary Aid Detachments during the period August 4th 1914 to December 31st 1919, who have not received any British title or Order.'
It was awarded to members of the Society or its Voluntary Aid Detachments whose unpaid service during World War I amounted to not less than 1000 hours, and to ambulance drivers and bearers who gave not less than 500 hours unpaid service.
