Overview
Victory Medal, awarded to Private Ernest Philip Carman, for his service with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War 1.
Carman was a married man born in 1884, a plumber living in Newtown, Wellington. He sailed from Wellington with the 31st Reinforcements of the Wellington Infantry Regiment (B Company) on 16 November 1917. His vessel, the Tahiti, travelled via Panama and arrived at Liverpool on 8 January 1918 - 9 months before the Armistice.
The Victory Medal is made of gold-coloured metal ["lacquered bronze"] with a double-rainbow patterned silk ribbon. The reciipient's name is engraved on the medal's rim. On the front [obverse] side is depicted the figure of Athene Nike, the Greek goddess of Victory, with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. On the reverse is the legend THE GREAT/ WAR FOR/ CIVILIZATION/ 1914-1919 surrounded by a wreath.
