Overview
This 1914-15 Star was awarded to Sergeant Arthur Richard Gillespie who served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War I. Arthur Gillespie was a married man who enlisted at the age of 34 at Albany, near Auckland. He sailed for Egypt with the Auckland Infantry Battalion (3rd Reinforcments) on 14 February 1915, and was wounded at Gallipoli. He survived the war, and died in Wellington on 12 October 1947.
Establishment
The 1914-15 Star was awarded to all those who served in a theatre of war with British or Empire forces between 5 August 1914 and 31 December 1915. Large numbers, over 2 million, were issued for services in France, the Dardanelles, East and West Africa, and other theatres of war.
