Overview
This Philips television set was purchased by Julia Koenig, who arrived in New Zealand with her family soon after the 1956 Hungarian revolution. Mrs Koenig worked for Philips Electrical for many years and as an employee was presented with many appliances made by Philips.
The television set was purchased in about 1966, when a minority of New Zealanders owned a television. In 1966, there were 434,877 tv sets were licensed in New Zealand - a rate of around 16% ownership per head of population.
According to the donor, all members of the Koenig family were conscious of making the most of their new home and worked hard to attain a lifestyle that would have been impossible in Hungary.
