Overview
The National Rifle Association of New Zealand was established in 1878. The association grew out of a national shooting competition established by the New Zealand government in 1861 for militia and volunteers. In 1901 the Defence Force took over the association, which was renamed the New Zealand Defence Rifle Association. However, in 1923, the National Rifle Association was reestablsihed in order to differentiate members' interests from that of the Defence Force.
The NRA badge combines the shield from the official New Zealand coat of arms, with the crossed rifles and silver fern.
On the back is a pin clasp.
