Overview
This pattern was designed by 'Ronald Paterson of England' for Vogue. Paterson, a Scot, studied fashion at the Piccadilly Institute of Design, and operated his own couture house from 1947 to 1968. As well as designing for film, he supplied Vogue's pattern service with a range of designs.
This pattern belonged to Alison Nicholls who purchased the pattern from Thomson's Silk Shop in Wellington, along with a length of fabric similar in design to the one shown on the pattern. In 2009 she gifted the pattern, the resulting dress and a swatch of left over fabric to Te Papa.
In the 1950s and 1960s, the editors of Vogue New Zealand worked with local department stores to promote Vogue patterns, and the latest British imported fabrics, through in-store parades.
