Overview
This banner features a design by Ursula Kortner for the West Auckland Peace Group in 1982. In her design, the rainbow falls into the sea against the hills of Titirangi and West Auckland. The sewing of this banner was done by Jennifer Lineham who was a dedicated peace activist in Christchurch.
The design was so popular that the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone Committee used it on other protest objects such as T-shirts, posters, stickers and badges.
This particular banner was made in 1984 and used in demonstrations and rallies for over two decades.
In 1985, Larry Ross the founder of the New Zealand Nuclear Free Committee, changed the organisational name to 'New Zealand Nuclear Free Peacemaking' and had two banners (including this one) made with the wording on this banner: 'New Zealand Neutral Peacemaker Nuclear Free'. This harked back to Ross's original petition policy plan from 1981 when he founded the New Zealand Nuclear Free Committee.
