Overview
This is a small wooden work or jewelry box with an intricate Celtic-like design on the top and all four sides, painted in green, yellow, blue, and red. The lid is not hinged, and the inside of the box is covered in red felt or velvet. On the bottom, there is an inscription that reads "Mowai Home / Wellington / 1944," indicating that it was made by a Second World War disabled veteran at Mowai Home, a convalescent facility in Wellington. The facility was set up and run by the New Zealand Red Cross and was the clearing house for all amputees waiting for the fitting of an artificial limb. This box is a significant example of rehabilitation work from the Second War and would have been produced by a wounded soldier during their recovery or while waiting for an artificial limb fitting.
