Checklist of the Fishes of New Zealand: Online Version 2.0

This electronic checklist documents all 1314 species (259 families, 55 orders) of marine, estuarine and freshwater fishes known within the boundary of the 200 nautical mile New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). For each species account, detailed information is provided on the valid scientific name, and it’s authority, year of publication, detailed bibliographic reference, page number(s), illustration number(s), collection registration(s) and number of primary types (where known), and type locality details. Additional taxonomic information includes subsequent designation of lectotypes and neotypes, nomenclatural comment, and the listings in New Zealand type catalogues. Also included are scientific names recorded in selected key catalogues and checklists for the New Zealand fish fauna published over the last 175 years (Richardson 1843a to Roberts et al. 2015a). We plan to update this electronic checklist on a regular basis and in addition, progressively include web hyperlinks to images of New Zealand primary types and taxonomic literature cited, most not readily accessible from outside Australasia.
