Isel House, near Stoke, was built by watchmaker Thomas Marsden.  Marsden was a watchmaker from Cumbria, England, and arrived in Nelson with his wife Mary in December 1842. He first set up in business in Selwyn Place then moved to Isel about 1848. He built the original house, planned the park and planted the older trees. The stone facade was added by his son James in the 1880s, after Thomas died.
