Parliamentary Recruiting Committee; publisher; December 1914; United Kingdom
Overview
This First World War poster refers to Belgium which was invaded by the German Army in October 1914. The soldier stands coolly firm - such men were encouraged to enlist to defend and avenge victims of German aggression, who in this case, were women and children. The woman and child fleeing the burning village in this image would have demonstrated why men should join up, i.e. to protect their families in England from a similar fate.
Such First World War posters drew attention to alleged German atrocities to outrage citizens and justify Britain's part in the war.
This poster was the second most popular image published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, with 140,000 copies printed between December 1914 and March 1915.
