Overview
This badge was made by HART (Halt All Racist Tours) for protesters to wear during the 1981 Springbok rugby tour.
The split black and white heart motif was the most well-known symbol of the anti-Springbok tour movement, and was designed in the early 1970s. It neatly makes visual the double meaning of the movement’s acronym: that black and white are together and part of the same human heart. It was designed to be easy for anyone to draw, paint or print.
Where do you stand?
For those not in the front line, wearing an anti-tour badge was a simple way to declare their allegiance. Anti-tour protesters argued that sport was not separate from politics, and that playing rugby against South Africa condoned apartheid. Some also saw the tour as an opportunity to address racism in New Zealand.
