Ashley Heath Baigent, service number 42970

The soldier in this image has been identified as Gunner Ashley Heath Baigent of the New Zealand Field Artillery.  Ashley was a farmer from Takaka at the time he attested for service on 8 January 1917.He was assigned to the 25th Reinforcements, New Zealand Field Artillery  but was found to have a goitre and therefore 'unfit for active service'.After the war Ashley became a director of the Nelson Freezing Works and worked as a  'fat stock buyer' for many years. He was also a County Councillor and a member of the Takaka Show Committee. was named after him.

Ashley  took over his father's farm in the 1940s in partnership with his brother Phillip.   He died on 17 May, 1958.
