The design of this very elegant vase is based on ancient Greek and Roman styles. It has been given a distinctive New Zealand identity by the engraved scenes depicting waka (canoes) in a harbour and fern fronds.

Still in business
The vase was made in Christchurch by the firm of B. Petersen & Company. The company, which is still in business today, was founded in 1863 by Norwegian-born Benjamin Petersen (1837-1916).
