The design of this very elegant vase is based on ancient Greek and Roman styles. It has been given a distinctive New Zealand identity by the engraved scenes depicting waka (canoes) in a harbour and fern fronds.

The vase was made in Christchurch by the firm of B. Petersen Company. The company, which is still in business today, was founded in 1863 by Norwegian-born Benjamin Petersen (1837-1916).
