Sampler

In the nineteenth century, Scottish girls from the age of five or six learnt both their letters and stitches by making beautiful samplers.

In this charming example Agnes Lawson has included the initials of two family members (probably her parents), the name of her school, and part of a biblical text from Psalm 11 verse 1: 'In the Lord put I my trust'. Recording family members in this way is characteristic of Scottish samplers.

This is one of three samplers in the collection made by two sisters, Jeanie and Agnes Lawson, who attended Kilconquhar School in Fife, Scotland.
