Jean Stevenson was one of many independent and talented young women in Rita Angus’s circle. She edited The Press Junior, a children’s supplement to Christchurch’s daily newspaper.

In 1934, Stevenson invited Angus to illustrate stories for The Press Junior. Angus retained this job until 1937, when she left to work as a fashion illustrator for Ballantyne’s department store.
