Tulip fields, Holland

Tulip fields, Holland  circa 1959
tempera on cardboard, 260 x 290 x 16 mm
Private collection

When Rita Angus travelled to Amsterdam in 1959, she glimpsed the tulip fields from the window of her train. She noted the colours in her diary: ‘red purple pink yellow off white & hyacinths’.

Soon afterwards, Angus painted this work, in which colourful abstract shapes suggest the tulips.
