Woman Sketching AD1965

Woman Sketching AD1965  1965
oil on hardboard, 600 x 590 mm
Anthony and Kristin Arthur collection

In this unusual picture, a woman is surrounded by images from Rita Angus’s home environment in Wellington – a cat, an easel, a tree, the moon, and the artist’s house.

Angus painted this work as a tribute to the ancient Egyptian art that had interested her since the 1930s. The pose of the figure, the arrangement of the images, and the flat, empty background all recall the decoration on Egyptian tombs.
