Portrait of Fred Jones

Portrait of Fred Jones  circa 1940
oil on canvas, 670 x 550 mm
The Clark Collection

Rita Angus painted this portrait in the year that her sister Jean married Fred Jones.

Jones admired Angus’s art and was impressed by her commitment as a painter and a pacifist. Soon after the outbreak of World War II, he wrote to Jean: ‘If we really believed in a thing, we would live by it, & damn the consequences … Rita believes in something like this. She lives by it, too.’
