This is Rita Angus’s last completed self-portrait. She began it when she was nearly 60, saying ‘I wanted to paint age into it.’

Marti Friedlander, who photographed Angus in 1968, observed, ‘There was nothing at all self-conscious about her, and vanity played no part in her make-up. Her face revealed her lively spirit.’ That lively spirit can be seen in this work.
