Landscape with Sea  1953
oil on canvas, 382 x 247 mm
National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa, Alexander Turnbull Library, Wellington

Rita Angus painted several experimental works in 1953, including one of her few abstract images – Landscape with sea. As the title suggests, this painting was inspired by the world around her.

Composer and friend Douglas Lilburn was initially puzzled by Angus’s abstract pictures. She told him to enjoy them for what they were – ‘shapes, colours & space’. She tried to help him understand that, just as some of his work had ‘a purely musical meaning’, her abstract pictures had ‘a purely painting meaning’.
