In 1957, the construction company owned by Rita Angus’s father built a new aquarium in Napier. In the following years, she often visited it with her sketchbook, attracted by its colourful and often bizarre species.

Angus painted a series of ‘fish’ works in the late 1960s – carefully designed pictures in which every creature seems to have its own personality. She made some of these works in Napier while staying with her parents. Once, her mother pinned up blue curtain fabric to help her create a mysterious underwater effect in her picture.
