Later Journeys 1958-70

Portrait of Rita Angus, 1968
Marti Friedlander
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
In 1955, Rita Angus settled in Wellington. Her inner-city home provided tranquillity, but she continued to travel in search of new ideas and subject matter.
A fellowship in 1958 allowed Angus to make her first and only trip to Europe, and she spent a year based in London. She was challenged by the art she saw and returned to New Zealand with a renewed sense of purpose.
The last decade of Angus’s life was tremendously productive. During the late 1960s, she focused on Wellington and Hawke’s Bay, painting some of her finest landscapes. In January 1970, she died of cancer, aged 62.
