Hawke's Bay sketchbook
Hawke’s Bay sketchbook circa 1967
black ball-point pen on paper, 136 x 188
Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, on loan from the Rita Angus Estate
These sketchbooks show Rita Angus’s quick observations of the Hawke’s Bay landscape. Angus often made the sketches from the front seat of the bus as she travelled from Wellington to visit her parents. Some sketches depict no more than fleeting details of buildings or hills.
Also shown here are more detailed drawings that Angus did at the Napier aquarium. The strange creatures there fascinated her. They inspired paintings like Fish V and AD 1968, which you can see on the opposite wall.
