Before demolition circa 1966-67
oil on hardboard, 590 x 595 mm
In 1965, Rita Angus received troubling news. Many neighbours had been told they would have to evacuate their homes because the land was needed for a new motorway through Wellington.
Angus’s own home was not affected, but she was shocked to learn that part of the motorway might extend over her boundary. In the following years, she painted several works, such as Before demolition, to document the old wooden houses of Thorndon.
