Moon (Leaf Series) 1965
oil on hardboard, 300 x 365 mm
Private collection
This is one of a group of works in which Rita Angus experiments with greatly magnified images from nature. The painting, she commented, is a view ‘seen through the eye of a caterpillar’.
Angus shows a plant silhouetted against a glowing moon, set among the rooftops of her Wellington neighbourhood. Like her other works from this period, the painting combines the familiar with the strange.
