Rita Angus loved the Kapiti Coast, north of Wellington, and the beach was a favourite sketching place.
This work shows the freedom of her watercolour technique. With quick brush strokes and washes of colour, she suggests the windswept beauty of the coast.
Angus often stayed with her parents at Waikanae for weeks at a time. In 1950, after a nervous breakdown, she spent a year at Waikanae while she regained her health.
