Orange leaves

Rita Angus did many sketches of flowers and trees as preliminary drawings for the goddess paintings. She considered details like these for a long time, developing them in sketchbooks until she had just the image she was looking for.

In May 1946, she wrote to Douglas Lilburn: ‘I would like to call perhaps Friday afternoon, about 4 o’clock, and to view the beauty of the copper beech, as I am thinking of the Sun Goddess, I have watched this tree, for years, and I feel a little excited, as I am ready to paint.’
