Rita Angus was married to Alfred Cook for four years. During this time, the couple made many sketching trips in the Canterbury region. They travelled and slept in Alfred’s van.

Angus made many quick drawings and watercolours on these trips, noting colours and other details. Back home, she used her sketches as a basis for oil paintings such as Hill landscape, North Canterbury. She continued to follow this practice all her life.
