Mt Stewart, Waiau, North Canterbury

Mt Stewart, Waiau, North Canterbury  circa 1931-32
oil on board, 400 x 505 mm
Anthony and Kristin Arthur collection

Rita Angus used a boldly experimental approach in this landscape, combining a range of styles. The hills are painted quite realistically, while the foreground is much more abstract. The river is reduced to a zigzag of colour.

The work was exhibited at the Otago Art Society in Dunedin in 1932. It impressed the influential artist and critic Robert N Field, who described it as ‘a splendid translation of truly New Zealand country’.
