Rita Angus based this painting on sketches she made on the bus on her way to physiotherapy treatment. At the centre, the steering wheel frames a series of views. In the foreground, small red arrows suggest alternate routes through the city. The sun, moon, and aeroplane are signs of other journeys still.
In 1964, Angus submitted the painting for the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts’ annual exhibition. She had exhibited there for many years, but Journey, Wellington was rejected.
Angus resigned from the academy immediately, hurt and angry: ‘I am not prepared to accept the decision of the Council, reserving my right to paint as I wish in the 20th Century.’
