Landscape with arum lily
Landscape with Arum Lily 1953
oil on board, 520 x 424 mm
Private collection
An unusual work in Angus’s career, Landscape with arum lily shows her interest in experimenting with the conventions of landscape painting.
The work was inspired by Angus’s first trip to Mangonui in Northland to visit friends. She returned to Christchurch excited by all she had seen, with new ideas and sketches for paintings.
This painting is made up of floating, overlapping images – the boats in the Mangonui harbour, the hills of Northland, a lily in a friend’s garden, and seaside plants and shells. Angus exhibited the work just two months after returning to Christchurch.
