Rita Angus probably made the small drawing you see here during a 1936 trip to Cass – a small town in the Southern Alps, north-west of Christchurch. In it, she accurately records the landscape, including the scars of a recent fire in the hills.

Back in Christchurch, Angus used the drawing as the basis for the large watercolour on your right. Here, she conjures a landscape of dazzling light and rippling patterns, using just a few colours.
