These artworks are an extension to a major installation of the same name. In the work, Ralph Hotere laid a line of paua shells along the floor, while Bill Culbert set neon tubes end to end, mirroring the line of shells.
The lithographs continue to explore how the natural environment can coexist with the fabricated world. The text is as important as the drawing in depicting the natural beauty of the Otago Harbour and its relationship to the man-made world.
This collaboration was based on the poem ‘Pathway to the Sea’ by Ian Wedde, and on poetry by Tangirau Hotere and John Caselberg.
