multimedia installation with aquaculture, plants, fish, and water

This living sculpture is a functional home-sized hydroponics system designed to become an alternative to buying vegetables grown on distant, petroleum-powered farms.

Much of the produce bought in the US travels an average of 1500 miles from farm to fork. The aim of Farm Fountain is to inspire others to build their own version, and ultimately reduce our impact on greenhouse gas emissions.

The plants include a variety of lettuces, coriander, mint, basil, tomatoes, chives, parsley, watercress, and Asian mustard greens. The fish are tilapia, a breed that has been farmed for thousands of years in the Nile delta.
