Overview

Te Papa holds more type specimens (about 4000) of New Zealand plants than anyone except the United Kingdom’s Kew Gardens and Natural History Museum.  Every published scientific name is permanently linked to a type specimen, which provides a reference point for the correct use of the name.  Type specimens are consequently essential for determining the application of scientific names.  Images of Te Papa's plant types are available from Collections Online.
