This exhibition explores the world of New Zealand potter Peter Stichbury (born 1924) and celebrates the honest beauty of everyday objects made by the studio pottery movement. Stichbury’s work is displayed alongside some of the works that inspired him, from the Leach Pottery, Michael Cardew, and Nigeria’s indigenous potters.


 

Peter Stichbury: Education, experimentation, and teaching

Some of Stichbury’s enduring interests and techniques began to emerge in this formative period. He increasingly rejected commercially-available clays in favour of local materials. He was also drawn to simple, everyday items for domestic use, like those shown here. more>

Peter Stichbury in St Ives and Abuja: The formative years

Inspired by his early experiments with clay, Peter Stichbury left New Zealand in 1957 to learn from the leaders of the studio pottery movement. He worked initially at Bernard Leach’s pottery in St Ives (the Leach Pottery) before travelling to Nigeria to work with another English potter, Michael Cardew, in Abuja (now known as Suleja). more>

Peter Stichbury: Return to New Zealand

The Stichburys returned to Auckland in 1959, greatly enriched by their time overseas. Peter immediately set about sharing his knowledge with students at Ardmore Teachers’ College. From now on, his creative life would be dedicated to teaching, developing his own practice, and reaching a wider pottery audience. more>
