This mere pounamu is thought to have been presented to Government forces as a symbol of peace at the cessation of hostilities by Waikato at the end of the New Zealand Wars [1863-1865].

It was presented to the museum by Leo Buller in 1911 as part of the Sir Walter Buller collection.
