Nicknamed 'Blue Milford', this is one of Brake's best known New Zealand landscape images and was widely used in tourism promotions from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Like many of his photographs, several variations exist. A seagull can be seen in some; in others, the position of the stick relative to the background appears different as Brake tried the shot from slightly different angles. There are varying amounts of sunlight on the mountains, indicating that Brake was responding to changes in the light over an hour or two.
Brake may have had no clear preference, as many versions have been published.
