Overview

This dinner place setting was made by Crown Lynn for meals served on Air New Zealand international DC8 flights from 1965. This was a high-profile contract for Crown Lynn, and the company excelled both in the design and creating durable but lightweight vitrified ware. The motifs indicate Air New Zealand's commitment to, and use of Maori iconography, particularly in the context of international travel and presenting New Zealand to the world.

Each piece of the place setting indicates function and potential food contents, and how public dining was carried out in the second half of the 20th century, particularly in the context of international travel.
