Water jugs like this one were produced by Crown Lynn, one of New Zealand's most well-known companies, in the 1950s and 1960s. They were designed specifically for domestic refrigerators. This jug is ribbed, and has a cream glaze. The word 'McAlpine' is written on each side in pale blue.

Refrigerator jugs were given to McAlpine customers as a bonus gift in the 1950s, and were available in white, yellow, blue, green and turquoise. Today they are highly sought after by collectors.
