Wes Wilson; artist; 1966; United States
Overview
Visceral and confronting imagery was used by both pro-abortion and anti-abortion groups. This powerful image of a pregnant woman nailed to a cross was printed as a poster. It was also seen carried as a placard in a rally in Wellington in 1972 organised by the Abortion Action Committee.
The female figure was originally created by American artist Wes Wilson (1937-2020) for a poster advertising a music event in San Francisco in 1966. He was one of the leading designers of psychedelic posters at that time.
