Overview
Beatrice (Peggy) Proffit (née Hay)
Peggy Hay was born in Waimate on 23 September 1924 and died in Wellington on 4 October 2016.
She was brought up in the Uretane farming district, south of Waimate, South Canterbury, and studied at the Canterbury School of Art from 1943 to 1948. Her years at the school were interrupted by the need to go home to take her mother's place on the farm.
Taking the craft and design option at the school, Hay made art metalwork and jewellery, incorporating cabochon-shaped enamels. She also prepared and printed distinctive hand block-printed wallpaper and fabric. The fabric was either silk-screen or lino printed, and later made into fashionably-styled dresses.
