Overview
Here, Colin McCahon – like Ralph Hotere – moves into more abstract territory.
Both artists have restricted their palette to black – to dramatic effect. But the works diverge in their treatment of the painted surface. Hotere’s enamel paint on glass is immaculate, without any trace of the artist’s hand. McCahon, by contrast, has mixed sawdust into his paint to create texture, contrast, and dimension in his abstract representation of the land.
