Palm Sunday

In this unfinished mural, A Lois White depicts Jesus riding triumphantly into Jerusalem on a donkey. His supporters spread cloaks before him as a sign of honour.

White’s staunch Methodist upbringing and leftist political leanings often shaped her artistic practice. Here, she reinterprets a biblical scene with a crisp, decorative style, emphasising the exuberant gestures of the women and children in the procession.

By contrast, the figure of Jesus is still and self-contained. His face is obscured, enhancing the sense of mystery, and his pale robe sets him apart from the crowd.
